Learn to program & help Spry!

posted Nov 21, 2017, 6:41 AM by James Johnson

Spry has an exciting fundraising opportunity! is a monthly subscription that teaches children how to program their own apps and games. Each month, a kid gets either an email or a package with 10+ new games and apps that they code themselves. They can customize their games however they like and share them with friends and family.

With each new Bitsbox subscription ($20 - $33 monthly), Bitsbox will donate $25 to Spry! So your kids, students, nieces, etc get an exciting and fun educational experience each month, and Spry gets money!

Here's a short video, but works like this:
1) A kid (ages 3+) chooses an app card.
2) They type the code, line by line, into the app on
3) After they finish, they can do the challenges or customize their app.
4) They share their finished game with their friends and family, it works on all devices! Here's one of my games.

If you think this is cool, please consider telling your students and other kids in your life about it. I use it as an extension activity for my classes and the kids love it! I also tutor some kids with it and they get super excited when it arrives in the mail!

Here's a flyer with more info. Anyone making a purchase should use the code JOHNSPRY for a $5 discount and then our school gets $25!

Our principal, Ms. Garcia-Graham does such great work that she deserves our thanks every day of the year – but we and our partners want to make a special effort to thank them during Principal Appreciation Week, starting Oct. 16.

Our principals are the heart and soul of our school communities, and are a huge part of why Chicago students are thriving. Now you have a chance to show these outstanding school leaders how much they are appreciated.

This week, post a message, selfie, or photo using #PrincipalPrideCHI on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat!

Also, sign the digital Thank You card to our cities principals!

Thank You, Ms. Garcia-Graham

Feliz día de la independencia

On Friday, we celebrated the Mexican Day of Independence! It was a fabulous day! Students wore the colors of the Mexican flag or traditional Mexican garb. We had a parade around the school that culminated in a poem read by one of our 8th graders, the Grito de Dolores by our Alderman Cardenas, and the Mexican and American national anthems! We had a lot of fun!
Special thanks to our parents who helped organize and participate and to Spry's Mexican Culture Committee!

We created a photo album. If you attended, please upload your best photos so we can all remember this day.

Beautifying Spry Elementary School

posted Apr 20, 2017, 1:39 PM by James Johnson   [ updated Apr 20, 2017, 1:41 PM ]

John Spry Elementary School is a school in the Little Village/Marshall Square community in the city of Chicago. It has some of the most wonderful and culturally rich student body in the city. The school serves about 800 low-income students in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Chicago.  The Chicago Public Schools(CPS) has made major budget cuts that has drastically limited resources at our school. Despite these cuts, we have persevered and have reached a Level 2 rating. We are actively searching for fundraising opportunities to support our idea to beautify the interior of the school building. This will promote a positive learning ambiance in which the student’s will feel a sense of pride and ownership of their school. We are asking for your support.

We are hoping to raise $6,000 to paint the interior of our school. The school is in dire need of a makeover and we would like your help. The funding will only cover the materials.  The labor would be provided by volunteers that will include teachers, parents, friends, and students.

Our goal is to raise the funds by end of the school year. It is our hope to start the following school year with a freshly painted building. This will also serve as a symbolic fresh start and provide a positive learning environment for our students.

We appreciate your help in accomplishing our educational goals. As a result, our students will be more engaged and committed to learning.

Have a lot of fun, but make sure you're ready for next year too! Read a lot of books, learn something new every day, do a couple science experiments with your parents, and play outside!

See you next year!
